Footballer-turned-actor Eric Cantona has always had a phenomenal stage presence—whether in the theatre or the penalty box. What can you do to build your own stage presence?

So the new Ken Loach movie, (starring Eric Cantona) was being reviewed everywhere this week.
Let’s just say Cantona is unlikely to be receiving an Oscar anytime soon, but the curious thing was that at least two reviewers I heard.
Both commented on Cantona’s great stage presence.
Indeed, the Irish Times described Cantona has having “magnetic screen presence”!
What gives someone a strong stage presence?
Well, I know that this is something that I’m going to return to often in my blogs.
What is it that draws us to people, that connects us with people?
It can be an intrigue.
As a communications, voice and executive coach with training from the world of acting and the theatre, I’ve learned a thing or two about creating presence during my career.
Now, let’s imagine you’ve got an interview, or you have an upcoming presentation to deliver, or you are due to give a speech to a packed conference room?
How can you to increase your stage presence?
Here’s one quick technique to try for starters.
Build Stage Presence with Pause and Breath
Speak at a slow pace. The biggest mistake people make when it comes to job interview techniques or delivering a presentation or even a keynote speech, is simply this.
Speaking too quickly.
So never underestimate the power of the pause.
For one thing, it shows that you are not afraid of silence.
For another, it allows your listener to absorb what you have just said.
So when you are about to begin your presentation or answer a question:
- Look at your audience.
The listener is waiting for you.
Pausing always adds greater significance to your message, and as a result adds to your stage presence.
I hear you asking: could it be that simple?
Well take it from me. It’s a very good starting block. I urge you to try it and let me know how it goes.
